Give Yourself an Edge, Go Vintage!

Only three months young, Mafalda emerges as the new go-to place in vintage fashion. The store is owned and run by Christina Kolbe. Christina has worked hard to create a fresh outlook on vintage pieces. What you will not find in her store are over the top or kitschy pieces that are best suited for a costume party. What you will find are high quality unique pieces to work into your everyday wardrobe. Christine looks for clothes that still feel modern and relevant. So, instead of looking like a blast from the past, you will have one of kind items, from belts to dresses that will make your outfit pop.

For vintage novices, one of strengths of going vintage is that it serves as an escapism from mass produced clothes that can lock you into a cookie cutter look. Another upside to shopping vintage is the quality. The merchandise at Maflada ranges from no-name to designer. As I perused through the items, I noticed that, for the most part, they are fairly priced. That isn’t to say, of course, that you can’t find some really spectacular pieces there that will take a bigger chunk out of your wallet. The look of the pieces varies quite a bit, ranging from a daring jumpsuit with the face of a leopard, to a simple yet elegant little black dress. Don’t be frightened to try on something a little eccentric, for Christina’s warm and friendly manner will put you at ease and her impeccable taste will not steer you wrong.

Situated on one of the boutique-lined blocks of Atlantic Avenue, the store fits in perfectly in the serene, yet happening Boreum Hill. At the risk of sounding like a naïve Manhattannite, I will admit that this neighborhood is new to me. However, I immediately loved it and was, unfortunately, also sad I do not live there. I highly recommend making the short trip across the Brooklyn Bridge to visit Mafalda and the restaurants, home décor and antique stores that surround it.

The store is located on 360 Atlantic Avenue and is open Monday 11–7, Wednesday–Saturday 11–7 and Sunday 11–6.
