Boy meets girl. Boy is intrigued by girl. Girl doesn’t care. It seems as though this storyline has been told over a million times. Even so, this upcoming independent film attempts to bring in a newly realized perspective: the film is written as another one of the lead character’s romantic novels, typewriter and all.

To give the basics: Scott Caan, writer, producer and star of Mercy, plays Johnny Ryan, a romantic novelist who ironically has no faith in the subject. As he successfully makes a living off of those he believes to be pathetic, he suddenly finds himself in love with his biggest critic. This mysterious woman, rightfully named Mercy, is portrayed by Wendy Glenn. Mercy becomes the driving force in both Johnny’s writing and his love life…until he loses her. This film boasts both an onscreen collaboration between Scott and his father, James Caan, and a brilliant supporting cast including Dylan McDermott and Erika Christensen. Directed by Patrick Holeck, Mercy was awarded both best film and best direction at the Savannah Film Festival.

According to IFC’s Official Website, “Mercy explores the struggle of maintaining a relationship, and the possibility of losing it all.” This award-winning film was also selected to be viewed at both the Gen Art and the Cinevegas Film Festivals. After getting picked up by IFC films, Mercy opens in theaters April 30, 2010. Is this film different than every other romantic film? There’s only one way to find out.
