Most theatergoers are all too familiar with Hamlet, William Shakespeare’s classic tragic tale of the Prince of Denmark. Whether in an English class, at the movies, or in a Broadway theater, many have analyzed the complexities of this character and the play’s subjects of death and revenge, over and over again. This raises the question: What is the point of another production? New Perspective Theatre Company (NPTC) has the answer. On the topic of their newly constructed production of the infamous tragedy, their official website remarks, “This is not your grandfather’s Hamlet!”
Directed by Melody Brooks, this Hamlet explores the unexplored meanings and the unanswered questions. For example, what does the Book of Revelation have to do with Hamlet’s structure? How about modern politics? Along with the original source material, NPTC always brings in intellectual research for their highly physical productions. Using author Linda Kay Hoff’s influential argument, their Hamlet features Bill Blechingberg (Claudius), Bernardo Cubria (Hamlet), Jenny Greeman (Ophelia), C. Amanda Maud (Gertude), Rafael Jordan (Horatio), Kim Sullivan (Polonius) and Terrell Tilford (Laertes).
Being NPTC’s first main stage Shakespeare play since early 2006, Hamlet runs from May 13 to May 22 at Theatre 54 (244 W. 54th St.). As suggested by their name, New Perspectives Theatre Company finds their own original “perspective” to introduce a greater importance of classic plays to contemporary times. So we ask: How can we apply Shakespeare to our contemporary world? Well, “that is the question.” For more information, visit their official website, www.newperspectivestheatre.org.
