The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos)
Argentina’s Oscar-winning tale about love and justice
Having won this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, director Juan Jose Campanella’s The Secret in Their Eyes beat off the widely-praised French frontrunner A Prophet with a film that’s part detective narrative, crime thriller and romance. The Secret in Their Eyes is at its core the story of an old man coming to terms with loss and loneliness.
Benjamin Espèsito (acclaimed Argentinean actor Ricardo Darìn) is a recently retired criminal court investigator who is haunted by a 25-year-old unresolved rape and murder case. He decides to write a novel about it, confiding in beautiful judge and former colleague Irene Hastings (Soledad Villamil). Over the course of the story, he rediscovers his love for Irene and uncovers the culprit. However, Benjamin’s pursuit of the truth leads to an unexpected ending, and through this the narrative explores the complexities of judicial systems as well as relationships.
Based on the novel by Eduardo Sacheri, The Secret in Their Eyes goes back and forth between the present and 1974. The relationship between then and now is conveyed through the interweaving of flashbacks into the overarching detective story. Campanella has stated he is fascinated by memory, both human and national. This preoccupation is apparent in his choice of camera shots, as well as the contextual and intertextual layers in his work.
The Secret in Their Eyes opens on April 16th in New York at the Angelika Film Center. For tickets or more information, please visit angelikafilmcenter.com.
