In just a few hours, Encore will be at Kutshers Country Club with 2,000-3,000 other music lovers for the beginning of All Tomorrow’s Parties NY 2010. It’s not often you’re excited to go to Monticello (or Middletown, where our motel is located), but for ATP NY, we’re willing to risk a little city home sickness.
ATP doesn’t waste any time in getting to the good stuff; tonight is the “Don’t Look Back” series, so Iggy and the Stooges will perform Raw Power in its eternity, while day one closer Sleep will play their 1992 album, Sleep’s Holy Mountain. Also on the bill for tonight are Mudhoney and the Scientists. As excited as I am for Iggy and Sleep, though, there’s a band on day two I can’t wait to see even more: Explosions in the Sky.
The Austin, Texas-based band made up of Christopher Hrasky, Michael James, Munaf Rayani and Mark T. Smith describes their sound as “cathartic mini-symphonies,” which seems about as accurate as any other description, although “epic” works pretty well, too. Every Explosions song is an instrumental with multiple guitars, and most ranging in the seven-minute+ category.
Explosions have released five albums, including my personal favorite, 2003′s The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place. The band also wrote and recorded new songs for the Friday Night Lights movie soundtrack in 2004, and they have since become synonymous with the FNL brand (their music is also used on the television show of the same name).
Supposedly, the band is releasing a new album next year, which would be their first since 2007′s All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone. We miss you too, Explosions, and we’re glad you’re playing tomorrow evening at ATP. Below are a few of the finest songs by Explosions in the Sky, and if you have any further ATP-related questions, please click here.
