It’s amazing Boise, Idaho’s most famous band, Built to Spill, have made it this far with their integrity intact. They released their first album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, in 1992, and followed it up with the minor masterpiece, There’s Nothing Wrong with Love. A year later, guitarist/vocalist Doug Martsch & Co. signed with Warner Bros. Records. A MAJOR LABEL!
The indie world was shocked and felt betrayed. But the band didn’t care and they kept on making great music. In fact, their first album for Warner Bros., Perfect from Now On, is Built to Spill’s best—and one of the finest albums of the 1990s in general. From there, they kept making solid albums, like 1999′s Keep It Like a Secret, 2001′s Ancient Melodies of the Future and 2006′s You in Reverse.
They really should have gone the way of Green Day by now, i.e. super-successful indie signs with a major label, releases a few good to great albums, then go crazy and released something like American Idiot. Instead, Built to Spill have stuck to their formula and kept their integrity, all the way from Alternative Wavers to 2009′s There is No Enemy. They’re not only one of the best bands out there; they’re also one of the best touring bands, too.
And they’re in town tonight! Sort of. Built to Spill is performing on a boat as part of the Rocks Off Concert Cruise series. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show can be purchased here.
