It’s like “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)”…but in movie form!

Where to begin? Well, we all know what happened on September 11, 2001, and like any tragedy, there were plenty of songs written about it. For instance, Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” and Paul McCartney’s “Freedom” both, well, capitalized on something terrible—and were both terrible songs, too.

But now there’s a movie about 9-11. It’s not like World Trade Center or United 93, though; it’s a musical called Clear Blue Tuesday. You never actually see the planes hitting the buildings—a rare act of subtlety if the rest of the trailer proves accurate—but you hear it and you see the reactions from “11 New Yorkers” who eventually “must rediscover their city.”

To the New York Times, director Elizabeth Lucas said, “I have very little interest, as a director, in naturalism. I find naturalism a little pedestrian.” No kidding. Less than 20 seconds after hearing the planes, we get a Roger Daltrey-esque scream which begins the music part of the musical. Then the amazing lyrics, “Grieving, grieving/Yearning, yearning/Seething, seething,” followed by, I think, “burning, burning.” I really hope I’m wrong.

I know it’s unfair to judge a film before actually seeing it…but the film’s motto is “Paint a Brand New Sky.” To quote Gob Bluth, come on! If you’re feeling curious, Clear Blue Tuesday begins screening at the Quad Cinema this Friday.
