Kristin Hersh first found fame as a member of Throwing Muses, Rhode Island’s most famous alternative rock band. The group recorded eight albums, from their self-titled debut in 1986 to 2003′s second self-titled album (confusing, I know), and found success with singles “Bright Yellow Gun” and “Sinkhole.” In 1994, Hersh began a solo career, while still recording with Throwing Muses, and continues to make music to this day.
But before all this, at the age of 18, Hersh was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and, just as Muses were signed by a label, she became pregnant. Her new memoir, Rat Girl, discusses the challenges Hersh faced “wondering whether antidepressants could be mixed with prenatal vitamins, how to balance a guitar on her swollen stomach, and whether a rock band could tour with an infant.”
It’s quite the stirring book, and tonight at 7 p.m. at the Union Square Barnes & Noble, Hersh will talk about it with journalist Katherine Lanpher. For more information, please click here.
