Lucy, the australopithecus

When visitors walk through the hallways of Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia, they are treated to a learning experience like none they’ve had before. The exhibit features the history of Lucy, an australopithecus who lived 3.2 million years ago. As a precursor to homo sapiens, Lucy and her counterparts represent a rich element of our own history as human beings.

The exhibit is two-fold, with one half telling the story of Lucy, and the many species of early hominid that occupied what is now Ethiopia, which has come to be known as the cradle of life in the scientific community. The other half of the exhibit explores the history of this rich country, from the rule of King Menelik, son of the Queen of Sheeba and King Solomon and founder of the Solomonic Dynasty, to the rule of the Orthodox Church in ancient Ethiopia, to Ethiopia’s influence on Haiti during the racially-tumultuous mid-twentieth century.

Viewing Lucy’s Legacy is an eye-opening experience sure to make visitors think about things they may never have before. The walk through more than 700 centuries of African history often ignored in traditional Western teachings is revealing. The photo and physical re-enactments of a multitude of early hominid species remind visitors that the process of evolution that brought our ancestors to fruition was long and varied. A virtual 360-degree-mural depicting co-existing and developing hominids is amongst the highlights.
