The beauty of Rooftop Films is its drive to not only show its audience films that may not have otherwise seen the light, but its commitment to creating an entire theatrical experience. Screening locations are chosen as much for seating capacity, as their contextual applicability to the film. The perfect example of this is Thursday, August 13’s free showing of Earth Days at Stuyvesant Cove Park.
The documentary, directed by Robert Stone (Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst), examines the inception and development of the modern environmental movement. Still fairly young, the call to environmental arms has never been examined in the way that Stone studies it. Audiences will be completely caught up in the triumphs and failures of activists’ mission to save the earth as they gain first hand accounts of the movement from those who were there in the beginning. The film’s context is extended in its showroom, the Stuyvesant Cove Park. Both park and environmental center, the location is a functioning reminder of the daily efforts of environmentalists to preserve nature.
The film will be presented in Solar One, the eco-classroom that serves as a self-sufficient and energy producing greenhouse and acts as a functioning example of renewable environmentalism. Tickets for the film are free with an RSVP and can be obtained by e-mailing neidl@solar1.org. A free wine reception precedes the film.
