While waiting for Wilco’s performance at Solid Sound to begin this past Saturday, I struck up a conversation with the guy next to me. He was there with his girlfriend, like I was with mine, and we began talking about the Flaming Lips, R.E.M. and other bands that every Wilco fan also likes. Then he mentioned his “musical bucket list,” which refers not to the movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, but to the concerts that you need to see. He listed Arcade Fire and we both mentioned Tom Waits, who has only hit the road three times in the past decade.
If I could go back in time and see any five artists at any point in history, I’d pick:
Bob Dylan and the Band, circa 1966
The Velvet Underground, circa 1969
The Clash, circa 1977
The Smiths, circa 1986
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, circa 1975
You may ask, where’s Beethoven and Mozart? Or what about prehistoric music, like caveman grunts, or something? They got nothing on The Queen is Dead-era Smiths.
