Coraline, Neil Gaiman’s imaginative, immersive and often macabre book has been turned into a musical with the help of Stephin Merritt (music and lyrics), David Greenspan (book), Leigh Silverman (director), and a versatile cast at the MCC Theater.
The adventures of Coraline, a young girl trapped in the large and often boring home of her ever-working parents, follow the curious girl as she stumbles upon a fantastical Otherworld which may not be as perfect as it initially seems. The musical adaptation of Gaiman’s groundbreaking graphic novel is both true to the book and an original delight all its own. Merritt’s music captures the ghoulish tone of the book and adds to the overall edge-of-your-seat experience as you wonder what will happen to Coraline next.
The set pieces and technical wizardry happening onstage will astound audience members as they let their imaginations roam. Their usher on this trip, Jayne Houndyshell’s Coraline is precocious and brave; the kind of girl who might have led you into a dark, scary basement or for an exploration mission in forbidden woods as a child.
