In just seven short years, Elf has become a Christmas staple, right up there with such classics as It’s a Wonderful Life and The Muppet Christmas Carol (it’s better than you remember). Now it’s becoming a Broadway musical, directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (The Drowsy Chaperone, Monty Python’s Spamalot) with songs from Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer) and book by Tony Award-winners Thomas Meehan (The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

Partial casting for the musical was announced yesterday, including Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone), Mark Jacoby (The Phanton of the Opera), Matthew Gumley (Mary Poppins), Valerie Wright (Annie Gets Your Gun), Michael McCormick (Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas), Michael Mandell (A New Brain) and George Wendt (Norm!).

Full casting—including the lead roles of Buddy and Jovie, portrayed by Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel in the film—will be announced shortly.

Previews for Elf, about a man raised as an elf in the North Pole escaping to New York City, begin November 2, with an official opening on November 14 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre (302 W. 45th St.). The musical will run through the holiday season, until January 2.

Here’s hoping they keep the “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” shower scene.
