The Success of Failure
Cynthia Hopkins delivers the third installment of her Accidental Trilogy at St. Ann’s Warehouse
| | More
Over the course of several years, St. Ann’s Warehouse has fostered the development of Cynthia Hopkins’ highly acclaimed Accidental Trilogy, in which the New York-based artist has explored themes of amnesia, nostalgia and shifting identity through a seamless integration of video, set design, lighting, music, text and movement. Now, The Success of Failure (Or, The Failure of Success) finds Hopkins collaborating once again with designers Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg, as well as director D.J. Mendel, to deliver an epic folk tale from the distant future.
Like Parts I and II of the trilogy, the new show features music throughout, with Hopkins’ plaintive, emotionally rich voice at the center. But whereas the previous pieces found Hopkins surrounded by her band, Gloria Deluxe, The Success of Failure is primarily a solo show, with occasional backing vocals by Findlay and Sugg. Still, Hopkins is not exactly alone onstage: In Act I, she is joined by a cast of colorful characters, projected on film, all played by her. She also accompanies herself, singing harmonies and playing multiple instruments. In Act II, she performs as herself, stripped down to jeans and a t-shirt. Altogether, The Success of Failure is a wild ride that includes flying and floating in space, as Hopkins takes us on a mission to save the universe and ends up saving herself.
Presented by St. Ann’s Warehouse, performances will take place Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 P.M. and Sundays at 4:00 P.M. Tickets start at $22.50 and are available online at www.stannswarehouse.org and by phone at 718.254.8779.
