From Tampa Bay to Broadway; now that’s an adventure for Alice.

Wonderland, a musical about a grown-up Alice heading back down the rabbit hole, won’t be previewed on Broadway until March 2011 (with an official opening the following month), but there’s already a website and a director (Gregory Boyd), writers (Boyd and Jack Murphy), lyricist (Murphy), composer (Frank Wildhorn) and choreographer (Marguerite Derricks). The cast, design team and ticket information will be announced shortly.

The musical has been running at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, FL since last fall to rave reviews.

According to producers Judy Lisi and William Franzblau: “Alice’s story is one that has always resonated with us—whether reading it when we were children or now as adults. With Wonderland, our creative team has developed a Broadway musical that tells the story of a contemporary woman attempting to maintain her career as well as keeping her family together and not doing well with either. At her breaking point she escapes into the world of Wonderland where she finds out who she really is and what’s important in life.”

Let’s hope this is more Alice in Wonderland, circa 1951, rather than Tim Burton’s underwhelming and over-expensive vision.

Update (9/8)

Wonderland will begin March 21, 2011 at the Marquis Theatre, with an official opening set for April 17.
