There’s nothing more infectious than a catchy indie pop band (see: The Vaselines), and tonight at Don Hill’s is the New York premiere of one of the genre’s newest and finest: Standard Fare. Hailing from Sheffield, the trio of Emma Kupa, Danny How and Andy Beswick make simple, unpretentious, highly catchy pop songs.
Influenced by everyone from the Lemonheads to Sam Cooke, Standard Fare is touring behind their debut album, The Noyelle Beat, released on Bar/None Records earlier this year. Both the perky voiced-Kupa and How sing, while Beswick provides steady drumming, leading to a perfect jangle pop sound. The lyrics (“I’m only 22/I still don’t know what it is that I’m supposed to do”) are instantly relatable, and according to the band, “Our main influences are relationships and experiences. These songs are often what we wanted to say to someone at the time but couldn’t articulate.”
If you like the Pastels, Orange Juice or Belle & Sebastian, you’ll love Standard Fare.
Standard Fare plays at 11:30 p.m. tonight at Don Hill’s (51 Greenwich Street). Before and after the show, there will be a dance party. Admission is $5 ($3 with flyer or invite).
