Paul Taylor turns 80 today, I turn 23 tomorrow. We have so much in common.

Except he’s one of the foremost choreographers in American history, while I live in a small apartment in Brooklyn. Same thing, basically. He also gets a free Lincoln Center Out of Doors event dedicated to his birthday at Damrosch Park Bandshell, while I get, um, a nice birthday card from my grandparents.

As part of “80th Birthday Celebration,” the Paul Taylor Dance Company will perform “Airs,” “Syzygy” and “Company B,” while Taylor 2 takes on their namesake’s signature piece, “Esplanade,” as well as a collaboration with Asphalt Orchestra, who perform an original arrangement of the score to the pioneering “3 Epitaphs.”

The birthday fun begins tonight at 7:30 at the Damrosch Park Bandshell.
