Children by the million sing for Alex Chilton when he comes ’round/They sing “I’m in love. What’s that song?/I’m in love with that song.”—The Replacements

Alex Chilton, lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star, passed away on March 17, 2010 at the age of 59. On that day, the music industry lost one of its greatest voices.

Tonight at 8 p.m., pay your respects to the man who wrote many of rock’s greatest songs, including “Thirteen” and “The Ballad of El Goodo,” at “Channeling Chilton: A Night of Alex Chilton’s Music” at City Winery. It’s a night of remembrance for Mr. Chilton, with expected appearances by members of the Box Tops and the only living original member of Big Star, Jody Stephens.

Big Star was one of the most influential bands of the past 30 years (R.E.M. was particulary obsessed with the group), and a slew of fellow musicians will also perform at City Winery tonight, including: Yo La Tengo, Marshall Crenshaw, Jon Auer (member of the reformed Big Star), Doug Garrison, Rene Coman, Alan Vega, Jon Spencer (of the Blues Explosion), Fran Kowalski, Chris Stamey, Lesa Aldridge (Elizabeth Hoehn), Jay Proctor (of Jay & the Techniques), Bill Cunningham, Gary Talley, Terry Manning, Evan Dando, Jesse Malin, Danny Kroha (of the Gories) and Ronnie Spector. Surprise guests may show up, as well.

Tickets for “Channeling Chilton” cost $28, and part of the evening’s proceeds will benefit families and businesses affected by the Deepwater Horizon Disaster through the Gulf Restoration Network. For more information, including purchasing tickets, please click here.
