Monday, July 12
Mingus Mondays with the Mingus Orchestra
Jazz Standard, 8 p.m.
We could recommend Mingus Mondays in every “Seven Day, Seven Shows”, but we’ll only remind you sporadically. Today’s that sporadic week: Check out Mingus Mondays at the Jazz Standard, featuring the Mingus Orchestra. $25

Tuesday, July 13
Wolf Parade
Terminal 5, 8 p.m.
This Montreal-based band has had an impressive career and their new album, Expo 86, is the group’s best yet (and includes a song called “Pobody’s Nerfect”). Still, they haven’t hit the mainstream in the same way fellow-Canadians Arcade Fire have. Know what could change that? Taylor Lautner. The rest of the world has jumped on the werewolf bandwagon; why shouldn’t Wolf Parade? I know I’d rather see their parade, rather than this one. $25

Wednesday, July 14
Meat Loaf
Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, 7:30 p.m.
It came down to Meat Loaf  at Jones Beach vs. We Are Scientists at the Bowery, and although Encore likes the latter, we just couldn’t pick them over the former. Bat Out of Hell taught the world everything it needs to know about over-the-top bombastic theatrical rock ‘n’ roll.

It was a hot summer night and the beach was burning
There was fog crawling over the sand
When I listened to your heart I hear the whole world turning
I see the shooting stars
Falling through your trembling hands

You can’t get that at the Bowery. $22-$72

Thursday, July 15
Huey Lewis and the News
Theatre at Westbury, 8 p.m.
Oh, you think we’re kidding? You try writing a song as good as “If This Is It” and a video as good as “The Power of Love” (an appearances by Doc Brown helps). When you’re done doing that, you’ve still got to have your song mentioned in a Christian Bale movie and get parodied by Weird Al. Then you can question the choice. $59.50

Friday, July 16
Mates of State
Bowery Ballroom,
They’re a husband-and-wife duo and have been performing together since 1997. Aw. They also sing a lot of duets and have two daughters. Double aw. Oh yeah, they make good music, too. Imagine Sonic Youth as only Thurston and Kim, with less guitar and more keyboards. $20

Saturday, July 17
Dave Matthews Band
Citi Field, 7 p.m.
Years ago, DMB was my favorite, well, band. Sorry Bob Dylan, their version of “All Along the Watchtower” is clearly superior to yours. Move over, Velvet Underground, I’m gonna have a real good time together…with DMB. The Beatles, you say? Their lyrics suck compared to, “Could I have been a magnet for money? Could have been anyone other than me?” Yeah, I probably said all that at some point, or at least something close to it. Now, DMB has slipped into the Occasional Nostalgic Listen Then Feeling Guilty For It category, along with Third Eye Blind and matchbox twenty. But tonight, they’re playing at Citi Field, the home of my favorite baseball team, the New York Mets, so I’m awfully confused. $49.50-85

Sunday, July 18
Pronto
Pianos, 8 p.m.
Hear what someone from Wilco—in this case keyboard and piano player, Mikael Jorgensen—sounds like when he’s not playing “I’m the Man Who Loves You” for the 2,484th time. Not that we’re complaining, mind you. Pronto is also performing at the Solid Sound Festival. $8
