Introducing local twentysomething entrepreneurs

It’s important to have funding for the basic necessities like food, shelter and clothing. That’s why we wake up every day, go to work and deal with the insanity that is life. It sucks out our time and energy. Corporate America is selfish; it wants the best from us, but it rarely gives us a break. In every cubicle in New York City is someone who is fed up working for The Man and daydreams about other pursuits—including, perhaps, being the boss.
Well, listen up twentysomethings: Do not give up on your dreams just yet. In the coming weeks, I will be featuring local twentysomethings who dared to be their own bosses in the midst of domestic financial chaos. The series on young entrepreneurs kicks off with Keith Kirsner, the brainchild behind New York City’s fashion consulting firm Your Style Guy (YSG).
Kirsner, a former account executive for the New York Mets, launched his company in February of this year. What separates him from his counterparts is that he’s just your average guy who happens to obtain a natural talent for knowing what looks good on men. The moment of inspiration came in junior high, when he witnessed a fellow student get ridiculed for wearing horrible clothes. “I wanted to come up to him and say, ‘I can help you’,” says Kirsner. However, the idea of launching his business only came up recently, during a subway ride home. The F.I.T. graduate told me that a sharp-dressed man sitting nearby inspired him to make his dream into reality. That night, he bought the domain of his website and stayed up until 5 a.m. working on it. After only four months since the company’s launch, the business is already building its reputation around town.
The process begins with a complimentary style consultation. Keith discusses the preferred budget with the client during this initial meeting. He will work with the details he’s given. First on the to-do list is a process YSG calls “Wardrobe Tune Up.” This is when Keith personally edits the content of his client’s closet. He incorporates the client’s personal style preferences into the clothing articles he acquires. The company has also perfected mixing trendy items with classic pieces, a very important rule Kirsner religiously follows. YSG offers a word of advice to guys who find themselves lost when it comes to picking the right clothes.
Your Style Guy’s Five Point Plan to Better Style
- Know the difference between a trend and a basic item. Not all trends work for every person.
- It is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.
- There’s nothing wrong with getting a deal, but before you purchase, ask yourself why you’re buying the sale item. Buying the item strictly because of discount and neglecting the material, tailoring and look of the garment in proportion to your body will show in a negative light.
- There is an art to wearing color. Color is the first thing that attracts you to an item. Know at least one color that looks GREAT on you!
- Try tucking in your shirt, gentlemen. You’ll thank me later.
