I was given the opportunity to visit Francesca and her dancers as they prepare for their upcoming show at Joyce SoHo. As I sat there watching both dancers and choreographer were clearly in a stage of creative process. Frankly, I was impressed. Fortunately, I got to see their newest piece – still untitled. I felt the strong sense of passion in the way she directs her dancers- so detail oriented. It seems as if she has a painting in her mind and the dancers present each brush stroke as movements.

Her dancers moved so celestially that I would have never suspected that it was their first time executing it. Immediately, I knew that I was in a room with bona fide performers. I was swayed by what I had seen. I asked her what she intends to convey with it. ‘Nothing in particular’ she responded to my question. She then confessed that someone close to her is ‘dealing with an illness’. It is unknown whether or not this new addition to their repertory will be performed.

The Francesca Harper Project is set to debut its 5th anniversary season at Joyce SoHo on June 4, 2010. A special benefit performance featuring Tony nominated Desmond Richardson kicks off the 3-day production. The company will also be premiering Bach Remixed (by Francesca Harper) and a duet choreographed and performed by Harper and Ronald Brown. Also included in the evening’s lineup are The Calling, an excerpt from Splendid Isolation II by Jessica Lang and Francesca’s own Fearless Mine. In addition to these, expect to see already existing company compositions. For more information, please visit http://www.francescaharper.com/.
