British Pianist, Howard Shelley, comes to the Pasadena Symphony to showcase the giants of the Romantic repertoire

“From Russia with Love” will likely first make you think of the second installment of the English spy film series — James Bond. The Englishman on stage the Pasadena symphony on January 16, 2010, however, with be neither James Bond himself nor Scottish actor Sean Connery. Howard Shelley, one of Britain’s most outstanding pianists, who performs in London’s major concert halls, will be on the Pasadena stage performing the works of romantic composers Emil von Reznicek, Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff and Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky.
Shelley will be performing Reznicek ’s Donna Diana: Overture, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 as part of the Pasadena Symphony’s showcase of Romantic composers.
A long-time friend of the Pasadena Symphony, Shelley has performed Rachmaninoff’s works many times before, marking important anniversaries. He was the first pianist ever to perform the composer’s complete solo works in concert, during the fortieth anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s death. Shelley marked the fiftieth anniversary of his death, performing a recital at the Leipzig Gewandhaus as well as another later recital at Rachmaninoff’s villa in Lucerne, at the invitation of the composer’s grandson.
The Pasadena Symphony looks forward to warm welcome for their beloved English pianist. Shelley will also be teaching a Piano Master Class at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music on January 14th, 2010 at 4pm. Room 200. The class is presented by the Pasadena Symphony as a free gift to the community, with limited seating.
