Mexican-American relations is a hot topic these days. From immigration playing a big role in politics to race and multiculturalism issues influencing American, and especially Californian, society, there is much to discuss.

The best person for such an important discussion is Mexican novelist, essayist, scholar and diplomat Carlos Fuentes, who has focused on the relationships and identity of his home country for over 40 years. Fuentes will be speaking at UCLA Live’s Royce Hall on Saturday, December 12, at 8 pm.

Fuentes has influenced Latin American culture and is among the most renowned literary political figures of the Spanish speaking world. His novels, which have been widely translated, include the bestselling “The Old Gringo” as well as “Terra Nostra” and “The Death of Artemio Cruz.” “The Old Gringo” (1985) was the first United States bestseller written by a Mexican author and it was also filmed as “Old Gringo” in 1989, starring Gregory Peck and Jane Fonda.

Many of Fuentes’ works are centered on Mexico’s history and culture as well as its relationship with its superpower neighbor, USA. Some of his recent and upcoming works include a short story collection titled “Happy Families” (2008) and a play called “Adam en Eden,” due out in February 2010.

In addition to discussing serious topics relating to Mexican American relations, Fuentes will also share excerpts from his latest works.
