Black Grace Dance Company is New Zealand’s leading contemporary dance company. Founded by Choreographer Neil Ieremia in 1995, Black Grace is a delightful and unique combination of traditional Pacific dance and modern contemporary innovation. The group made their debut with the Celebrity Series of Boston in 2008 and will return March 12–14 at the Paramount Theatre (560 Washington Street).

The group takes its names from a New Zealand slang for daring or bravery and has held fast to that reputation. This daring is informed by the main influences that the company draws upon: the outside influence of the world of contemporary dance, the inclinations of the company members and the cultural influences of Neil Ieremia’s Samoan heritage. “Sure, we are informed by all of that. But we have to be free to leave it all behind. We’re the only ones standing in our way. I am simply a choreographer speaking what I find inside me; experiences and dreams about the world around me. I express this through dance,” reflects Neil.

Black Grace will be delivering a three-part program that features a selection of their best repertoire including; Minoi, a signature work based on the fusion of Samoan and western contemporary dance styles; excerpts from Surface, a full-length piece based on traditional Samoan tattooing, and excerpts from Gathering Clouds, Ieremia’s latest full-length work.

Tickets for the Black Grace Dance Company are priced at $54, and $44, and are available by calling CelebrityCharge at (617) 482-6661 Monday–Friday 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m or online at www.celebrityseries.org.
