Without exception Jonathan Demme is one of the most celebrated directors working in film today. His movies have garnered both critical and commercial success and read like a primer to awards season in the past 20 years—The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993), The Agronomist (2003), Rachel Getting Married (2008). The director’s efforts will be honored this year at the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Coolidge Awards, honoring excellence and originality in film. In conjunction with the festivities on March 1–2, the theatre will hold a retrospective of the director’s work leading up to the awards. Throughout the months of February and March, the Coolidge will present a variety of related programs.

Beginning on February 16 and running consecutive Tuesdays through March 16, Demme’s most prolific films will be shown. Included in the collection are the 1984 Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (February 16, 2010), Demme’s most famous work, 1992’s Oscar-winner The Silence of the Lambs (February 23, 2010), the critically acclaimed Something Wild (March 9, 2010) and the recent indie engine Rachel Getting Married (March 16, 2010). For those interested in Demme’s less well known early works, the Coolidge offers midnight showings. These include 1975’s Crazy Mama (February 26 & 27, 2010) and his 1974 directorial debut Caged Heat (February 26 & 27, 2010).

The festivities will begin March 1 at 2:00 pm when the Coolidge hosts a benefit screening of The Agronomist. Jonathan Demme will be in attendance to introduce the film and host a Q&A session with the audience following its conclusion. Proceeds will benefit the Haiti earthquake relief efforts. Continuing that night, at 8 pm the Coolidge presents a sneak preview screening of Neil Young Trunk Show, which will be released theatrically later in the month.

Finally, the Coolidge Award Ceremony begins at 8 pm on Tuesday, March 2 and will be hosted by Jenny Lumet, actress and screenwriter for Demme’s Rachel Getting Married. The ceremony will feature tributes by friends and colleagues as well as film clips and a special musical performance. Tickets for all of these events are currently available by visiting www.coolidge.org or by visiting the Coolidge box office (290 Harvard Street, Brookline).
